Kinda of sick of it. I’m not a very energetic person and it seems this class is hell bent on ‘improving’ me in that aspect. While I accept that I could be more energetic and probably be a more effective leader, I don’t really appreciate their tack of taking it to the extreme in the hopes that we’ll retain at least a little of it. I don’t wanna jump around! I think it’s creating the opposite effect.
We have these 2 minute talks to give every session. There are 32 of us. The 2 minutes usually rolls over into at least 2 and a half minutes. That’s an hour and 20 minutes of just the students talking. The whole class period is only 3 and a half hours long. Last session they also added 1 minute talks about something else. So now we’re at 1 hour and 52 minutes of student talking. Over half the class time.
I didn’t know this was a public speaking course. I didn’t really want to spend $1,700 on a public speaking course. Even if it wasn’t my own money…
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I shouldn’t gripe and should just appreciate the opportunity to learn something. I do. I do appreciate that I can go to this class and at least ‘freshen up’ on some leadership material.
But honestly…the drive isn’t worth it.
I see what you are saying. Seems like it would be a more valuable course if they taught leadership in a less one dimensional way...like more accommodating to different people's personal styles. How to maximize your leadership using YOU.
ReplyDeleteI agreed to take a class called "Oral Communication" knowing full well that it would make me speak in front of a class. But at the same time I was trying to get out of it by looking for an internship. Wound up taking that entire class and actually learned to enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteYou want to be the leader... you have that drive. Sometimes I think classes like that are designed for those more like me who don't want to be a leader in order to drag hidden qualities out.
ReplyDeleteIf half-or-more of a class I was taking involved student-led activities, I'd feel the same way. NOT very inspiring.
