What a week! It was one of those weeks that was so mind numbing/bending that once you get home, it just shuts down.
The new boss hasn't given me the official word, which should include compensation info, but the new job is pretty much in the bag. Meet the new General Manager. Yes, I capitalized that.
I was very flattered at the overwhelming confidence that my coworkers gave me for the new position. The new owner asked around and everyone said they would be happy with me being the GM. Being the GM puts me as the manager over sales, design, and production. I was just the lowly production manager for the old owners. It also makes me responsible for everything.
It's all quite exciting. The brain just won't shut up about it!
The new owner was here for 2 full days this week and we got a lot of discussing done. A few decisons were made, mostly to just hold off on making decisions. He told us of a couple of changes that would most certainly be coming, like how the sales commission would be calculated, but for the most part he was just here to learn how we operate. He, like the rest of us here, was flabbergasted at how it was run by our old owners. They were completely hands-off, but there was no one person here responsible for our operation. I suppose they were lucky that us managers worked so well together, but it was very much out of the ordinary. Everyone is thoroughly satisfied that is changing.
Of course, that in itself presents some challenges. I don't have any sales training at all and I'll be required to manage 3 of them. One already knows I have little respect for him. This gives me the opportunity to encourage him in those things I would like to be different, but he's going to have to step it up. The new owner also told the designers that they would have a say in the changes that will be made. That's how I operate anyway, but I'd almost rather he hadn't said anything.
It's been very interesting to see everyone's reaction to the situation. The new owner even called the lead salesman a 'nervous nellie'. He actually went through the same exact thing when he was a salesman for a different company that got bought by our new owners. He's had only good things to say, so I'm not sure what he's nervous about. Besides the design manager, I may actually be the least anxious about the whole thing.
It also means that I'll have to buy a new phone. They give allowances instead of providing a phone. Fine by me. I'm getting an iPhone, just don't know if I should bother with the 4s or save a dime and get the 4. They're only showing a white iPone 4 available. Is it crazy that's it's worth $100 to me just to get a black one? The crummy thing is that I need to decide soon. They have a 10 day lead time for shipment. I guess they've been backordered since they released the 4S in September. Wanna guess how much it is to tether an iPad 2 to an iPhone? $50 freakin' bucks a month!! Robbery. I hear it's free in Canadia.
So there it is. My excitement for the week. It's far from over and dang am I tired. Hope you all are doing well!
Woot! Congratulations Mr. GM! No wonder your brain won't shut down. That is so exciting.
ReplyDeleteI don't know an "i this" from an "i that"... so you're on your own there. No doubt in your business situation they would be very handy!
Congratulations man! Management is so fun. The more people you have the more bottles and diapers you'll need to have handy.
ReplyDeleteCongrats friend!!! Does this mean you'll be able to go to TRU now?? :)
ReplyDeletesilly rabbit - Thank you! It's almost more weird than exciting. I've been working as peers with these people for 4 years. It's gonna be an adjustment to be their boss.
ReplyDeleteCP - Thanks! Would you believe we actually have diapers on site? Part of a bodily fluid cleanup kit.
Nikki - No TRU for me. Too many meetings But have fun!
Congratulations, 3GK! I could pretend to be surprised, but I'm not at all. You'll do great and it will be envigorating to have some addtional challenges at a job you've been doing for a few years now. Yay!
